I thought I had found a true friend, someone I could trust with my deepest secrets. But little did I know, my vulnerability was met with mockery and betrayal. The pain was like an injection, entering into my body, yes that sharp pain, suffocating me. Every breath felt like a struggle, every memory a stabbing reminder of the betrayal.
Before that fateful day, our relationship had seemed genuine. We shared laughter, opinions, and dreams. Or so I thought. The contrast between what I believed and the harsh reality shattered me.
The pain was palpable, a heavy weight pressing down on my chest. Angina, chest pain, and sleepless nights became my unwelcome companions. My mind raced with thoughts of ‘why’ and ‘how could they?’ The doctor’s words echoed in my mind: ‘You’re thinking too much.’ I was trapped in a cycle of resentment, hatred, reliving the hurt with each passing day.
One day, I realized that my refusal to forgive was poisoning my mind and body. The constant stress and anxiety were eroding my sense of self, leaving me drained and wrecked. I felt like a shadow of my former self, lost and uncertain.
Lewis Smedes once said, "To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you." This saying is very correct because the moment I released that burden, I felt an overwhelming sense of ease. The weight lifted, the pain subsided, and I could breathe again. Forgiveness wasn’t easy, but it freed me from the prison of resentment.
Forgiveness is the best decision you can make for yourself. It’s not always about the other person; it’s about your own healing and freedom. Don’t let unforgiveness consume you. Choose forgiveness, and find peace. Remember, forgiveness is a journey, and it’s okay to take your time. But know that every step towards forgiveness brings you closer to inner peace and freedom.
